Jan 8

Brrrr its cold outside! Fortunately the bone chilling weather hasn’t stopped the devoted dog walkers from walking and even RUNNING with the delighted canines at Midlands Humane Society. If you’re someone who enjoys exercising in the cool fresh air – please come and sign up to be a dog walker/runner.
If you haven’t been to Midlands yet – what are you waiting for? We have a wonderful assortment of cats and dogs who would love to become your very best friend!
Tally (File #14029) is a charming 4-year-old Labrador mix all decked out in a chocolate suit. She came to us as an owner surrender – possibly because of her allergic reaction to nasty flea bites. She’s currently taking antibiotics and her skin is healing. One of her favorite things is to play tug-o-war with a rope toy. She’ll be watching for you – please don’t disappoint her!
Pip (File #14036) is a cute little Terrier mix in a tri-colored suit
who came in as a stray from Underwood.  He’s 4 – 5 – years old and is a little on the timid side – but I’m sure he’ll warm right up to you.
Mikey (File #14032) has the coolest ears of any canine I’ve seen in a long time! He’s a 6 – 7 – year old Labrador, Shepherd and Husky mix in a sleek tan suit. Mikey likes little dogs – but he doesn’tike big dogs – and he absolutely doesn’t like felines. So if you have cats – Mikey is NOT the dog for you! He does have a food allergy so he needs to be on a grain free diet to assure that he stays happy and healthy.
Stacheo (File #14016) One look at this fantastic feline and you’ll KNOW how he got his name! He’s a 1- year old fellow in a black and white suit with “purrsonality” plus. Stacheo likes to be held like a baby and is a very sociable fellow.
Lil Man (File #14032) is a 1 – year old Tuxedo Cat in a stylin’ suit of black with bright white accents. He’s great with kids and other cats. Lil Man lives to hang out on the perches in the Cat Colony Rooms. This sweetie is super playful and loves to play with toys that have feathers that he can attack.
Artie (File #14034) Holds the record for the first cat to escape from his kennel at Midlands Humane Society!  He’s a big boy who’s all drezsedina fluffy white suit with gray accents. Artie is 4- years old and loves to talk to anyone who will listen. He also enjoys being petted – but when he’s done -he’s done!
If you’re interested in volunteering – Theresa Van Soelen our Volunteer Coordinator will be conducting training classes every Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Midlands Humane Society.  Please call her at 712-396-2264if you’re interested in attending.
We have two exciting events coming up next month!
The first one is our annual Low Cost Vaccination Clinic sponsored by SOLAS.  This year it will be held on February 7th from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Lakeside Country Store, 4040 South Expressway in Council Bluffs. Costs are $10.00 for Rabies vaccinations and $15.00 for DHPP (Dogs) and   FRCP and FELUK (Cats). Dr. Barb Lee from Valley View Vet Clinic will be administering the vaccinations.  In addition, SOLAS volunteers will be implanting Microchips for $25.00 which includes registration.
WAGAGRAM!!!  Yes its time again to do something very special for that “pawfectly” wonderful person in your life!!  Midlands Humane Society is once again offering to have flowers or candy delivered to your special someone by an adorable “Canine Cupid” all dressed up for the occasion. The cost for this special treat is only $35.00.  The deliveries will be made on February 13th and 14th in Council Bluffs and Omaha.  For reservations  please call Terri Gach-Mils at 712-310-4413 or 712-366-2551.
SOLAS volunteers will be at Petco on 72nd and Dodge in Omaha this Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with cats and kittens available for adoption from our foster care program.
SOLAS rescue cats are also available for adoption every day at PetSmart in Council Bluffs during normal business hours.

OCTOBER is “Adopt a Shelter Dog Month”

OCTOBER is “Adopt a Shelter Dog Month”. In honor of this occasion, each week a lucky dog will be selected for “Dog of the Week” and S.O.L.A.S. will donate $20.00 towards the adoption fee! Also, “Cat of the Week” will continue and S.O.L.A.S. will donate $20.00 towards the chosen cat! What a great time to come adopt your forever friend!

Come meet Smokey (#1410). He is a beautiful blue, 3 month old, Domestic Short Hair. He was surrendered to the shelter because his previous family was not able keep him. This boy is very playful, loves attention, and is ready to come home with you!

The snuggle bug George (#1422), is just waiting at the shelter for his forever home. He is a Domestic Short Hair, brown tabby, between 1 and 2 years old. He was founding wandering around Chapel Ridge all by his lonesome. Can he wander his way into your heart?

This poor little girl, named Four Wheeler (#1421) was found abandoned in a home and some good Samaritans called the shelter to have her rescued. She is a white and black, Domestic Short Hair, about 7 months old. Will you give her the home that she deserves?

Finnigan (#1107) has been waiting for you to come and adopt him! He is a 5 year old, red and white Husky with big blue eyes. He was found cruising the 2500 block of South 16th Street. He loves to take walks and he is a perfect gentleman on the leash.

Are you looking for a senior sweetie? Come meet with Molly (#1300). She is a 10+ year old, tricolor, Beagle. She would love a friend to spend her golden years with. She was found strolling around the area of 27th Street and Avenue I. She likes short walks, fuzzy blankets, and she loves hot dogs! Yummy!

Who could resist the face of Hank (#1433)? He is a tan and white Mastiff mix, about 4 years old. Talk about a gentle giant. This guy takes a few minutes to warm up but then becomes the biggest teddy bear! He was found adventuring in the area of 25th Street and Pavich, wearing a dark color collar. If you are looking for your furry teddy bear, come adopt Hank!

Are you tired of those picnic and barbecue hot dogs? Donate your leftover hot dogs to the shelter! Hot dogs are great pill holders for giving sick dogs medication and also help some of the picky eaters regain their appetite. Such a simple thing can turn a sad dog into a happy one! Please take all donations to the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter at 2821 South 15th Street.

Check out Husker and friends!

Hey Husker fans!! Shouldn’t all Husker fans have a dog named Husker? Well, we have one waiting down at the shelter for you. He is just over a year old and is a shepherd/husky mix(no 1023). He is black and tan in color but has short smooth hair that doesn’t need a whole lot of care. He came in because he was loose. His owners failed to claim him and he is now up for adoption. Surely if you are a die hard fan, you will come and snatch this guy up!

Murphy (no 1098) turned himself into the fire station on north broadway this week after a joyous romp. We were called to pick him up and he was very matted and covered in burrs. Our officer trimmed him up a bit and he is ready to go to a new home. He is a 10 month old Lhasa Apso mix who is mostly cream colored with some darker gray ears and tail. He also has a doppleganger at the shelter by the name of “Hulk” you might want to check out too! Keep in mind Lhasa’s require lots of grooming.

A border collie (no 1067) was abandoned outside the shelter last Friday morning. He is a 2 year old male with a black and white coat that appears to have been shaved a while ago. Nobody claimed this sweet guy so he is available for adoption. He is very scared in his cage but warms up wonderfully when taken outside. These dogs are energetic so bring a toy and come play!

Tibor (no 2559) has graduated from Vatterott college and has been in our program since DECEMBER! That is far too long for a kitty to be in a cage. She is 1 year old dilute tortoiseshell female cat who is very social and loving. The students fell in love with her but unfortunately couldn’t find her a home. She is back and ready for adoption after being spayed and given current shots.

Moon (no 782) is a longhaired female dark tortoiseshell cat. She has been here since the beginning of August and is about 2 years old. She was found as a stray in a council bluffs apartment complex and was never claimed. She has been a very sweet and mellow cat here and is waiting her forever home.

Tabitha (no 1148) is a 4 month old brown and gray tabby shorthaired kitten that came in as a stray. She has the biggest eyes but is definitely the diamond in the rough here at the shelter. She looks kinda plain but is seriously the sweetest kitten ever. She starts purring the moment you pick her up and she loves to be petted. You will never regret taking this precious little girl home! She is available for adoption Saturday September 11th at 1pm. moon
